When the courses offered by the academic departments and the Center for Language Studies are combined, Brigham Young University can offer instruction in over 80 languages. More languages will be added as student interest grows and qualified teachers are found.
The Humanities Technology Research Support Center offers testing in many languages for BYU students and non–BYU students alike. The FLATS proficiency exam is accepted for language credit at BYU and many other universities. For more information, visit the FLATS home page.
Department of Germanic and Slavic Languages
Classes in Afrikaans at BYU are scheduled through the Department of Germanic and Slavic Languages. The Center for Language Studies will schedule additional courses in Afrikaans if a qualified teacher and sufficient student interest can be found. The Humanities Technology Research Support Center also offers a FLATS proficiency exam in Afrikaans.

Department of Asian and Near Eastern Languages
A full range of Arabic courses are taught at BYU through the Department of Asian and Near Eastern Languages. The department offers an undergraduate minor in Arabic and participates in the interdisciplinary major, Middle East Studies/Arabic. Arabic is also a language specialization in the Language Acquisition and Teaching MA program. Intensive courses in Arabic are regularly offered during the Summer Term by the Center for Language Studies. The Humanities Technology Research Support Center also offers a FLATS proficiency exam in Arabic.

Courses in English for native speakers are taught at BYU through the Department of English and the Department of Linguistics and English Language. The Department of English offers undergraduate majors and minors in both English and English Teaching, as well as a graduate MA program in English. Programs in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) are administered through the Department of Linguistics, and include a TESOL undergraduate minor, TESOL Graduate Certificate, and TESOL MA degree. Nonnative speakers may enroll in English as a Second Language (ESL) courses at BYU through the Department of Linguistics and the English Language Center. The Humanities Technology Research Support Center also offers a FLATS proficiency exam in English.

David Blackinton and Don Peterson will conduct the BYU Wind Symphony and Symphonic Band in a combined concert Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall. Q'd up, the faculty jazz ensemble, will appear as guests.
