When the courses offered by the academic departments and the Center for Language Studies are combined, Brigham Young University can offer instruction in over 80 languages. More languages will be added as student interest grows and qualified teachers are found.
The Humanities Technology Research Support Center offers testing in many languages for BYU students and non–BYU students alike. The FLATS proficiency exam is accepted for language credit at BYU and many other universities. For more information, visit the FLATS home page.
Afrikaans
Department of Germanic and Slavic Languages
Classes in Afrikaans at BYU are scheduled through the Department of Germanic and Slavic Languages. The Center for Language Studies will schedule additional courses in Afrikaans if a qualified teacher and sufficient student interest can be found. The Humanities Technology Research Support Center also offers a FLATS proficiency exam in Afrikaans.
Akan
Although BYU does not currently offer courses or proficiency testing in Akan, the Center for Language Studies will schedule courses in Akan if a qualified teacher and sufficient students can be found.
Albanian
Although BYU does not currently offer courses or proficiency testing in Albanian, the Center for Language Studies will schedule courses in Albanian if a qualified teacher and sufficient students can be found. The Humanities Technology Research Support Center also offers a FLATS proficiency exam in Albanian.
American Indian
Although BYU does not currently offer courses or proficiency testing in American Indian, the Center for Language Studies will schedule courses in American Indian if a qualified teacher and sufficient student interest can be found.
Arabic
Department of Asian and Near Eastern Languages
A full range of Arabic courses are taught at BYU through the Department of Asian and Near Eastern Languages. The department offers an undergraduate minor in Arabic and participates in the interdisciplinary major, Middle East Studies/Arabic. Arabic is also a language specialization in the Language Acquisition and Teaching MA program. Intensive courses in Arabic are regularly offered during the Summer Term by the Center for Language Studies. The Humanities Technology Research Support Center also offers a FLATS proficiency exam in Arabic.
Armenian
Although BYU does not currently offer courses in Armenian, the Center for Language Studies will schedule courses in Armenian if a qualified teacher and sufficient student interest can be found. The department administers an Armenian Credit Exam for BYU students. The Humanities Technology Research Support Center also offers a FLATS proficiency exam in Armenian.
Aymara
Although BYU does not currently offer courses or proficiency testing in Aymara, the Center for Language Studies will schedule courses in Aymara if a qualified teacher and sufficient student interest can be found. The Humanities Technology Research Support Center also offers a FLATS proficiency exam in Aymara.
Basque
The Center for Language Studies offers FLANG 305R, an advanced course in Basque which requires fluency. In addition, the Center will schedule other courses in Basque if a qualified teacher and sufficient student interest can be found.
Bicolano
Although BYU does not currently offer courses or proficiency testing in Bicolano, the Center for Language Studies will schedule courses in Bicolano if a qualified teacher and sufficient student interest can be found.
Bulgarian
Department of Germanic and Slavic Languages
Bulgarian 330, a course requiring language fluency, is scheduled through the Department of Germanic and Slavic Languages. The Center for Language Studies will schedule additional courses in Bulgarian if a qualified teacher and sufficient student interest can be found. The Humanities Technology Research Support Center also offers a FLATS proficiency exam in Bulgarian.
Burmese
Although BYU does not currently offer courses or proficiency testing in Burmese, the Center for Language Studies will schedule courses in Burmese if a qualified teacher and sufficient student interest can be found.
Cakchiquel
Although BYU does not currently offer courses or proficiency testing in Cakchiquel, the Center for Language Studies will schedule courses in Cakchiquel if a qualified teacher and sufficient student interest can be found. Cambodian

Cantonese

Chinese (Mandarin)

The department offers undergraduate majors and minors in both Chinese and Chinese Teaching. Chinese is also a language specialization in the Language Acquisition and Teaching MA program. Czech

Department of Humanities, Classics, and Comparative Literature

The Department of Humanities, Classics, and Comparative Literature also administers a Danish Credit Exam for BYU students. The Humanities Technology Research Support Center also offers a FLATS proficiency exam in Danish.
Dutch
Department of Germanic and Slavic Languages
Dutch 330, a course requiring fluency, is offered at BYU through the Department of Germanic and Slavic Languages. The department also administers a Dutch Credit Exam for BYU students. The Center for Language Studies will schedule additional courses in Dutch if a qualified teacher and sufficient student interest can be found. The Humanities Technology Research Support Center also offers a FLATS proficiency exam in Dutch.
English
Courses in English for native speakers are taught at BYU through the Department of English and the Department of Linguistics and English Language. The Department of English offers undergraduate majors and minors in both English and English Teaching, as well as a graduate MA program in English. Programs in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) are administered through the Department of Linguistics, and include a TESOL undergraduate minor, TESOL Graduate Certificate, and TESOL MA degree. Nonnative speakers may enroll in English as a Second Language (ESL) courses at BYU through the Department of Linguistics and the English Language Center. The Humanities Technology Research Support Center also offers a FLATS proficiency exam in English.
Estonian
Although BYU does not currently offer courses or proficiency testing in Estonian, the Center for Language Studies will schedule courses in Estonian if a qualified teacher and sufficient student interest can be found. The Humanities Technology Research Support Center also offers a FLATS proficiency exam in Estonian.
Farsi/Persian
The Center for Language Studies will offer beginning Farsi courses during Fall and Winter Semesters if a qualified teacher and sufficient student interest can be found. The Humanities Technology Research Support Center also offers a FLATS proficiency exam in Farsi/Persian.
Fijian
Although BYU does not currently offer courses or proficiency testing in Fijian, the Center for Language Studies will schedule courses in Fijian if a qualified teacher and sufficient student interest can be found. Finnish
Department of Humanities, Classics, and Comparative Literature

Classical Greek is an available emphasis under the Department's Classical Studies undergraduate major. The Center for Language Studies will schedule additional courses in Modern Greek if a qualified teacher and sufficient student interest can be found. The Humanities Technology Research Support Center also offers a FLATS proficiency exam in Greek.
Guarani
The Center for Language Studies offers FLANG 330R, an advanced Guarani course which requires fluency. The Center also administers a Guarani Credit Exam for BYU students. The Humanities Technology Research Support Center also offers a FLATS proficiency exam in Guarani.
Haitian Creole
Although BYU does not currently offer courses or proficiency testing in Haitian Creole, the Center for Language Studies will schedule courses in Haitian Creole if a qualified teacher and sufficient student interest can be found. The Humanities Technology Research Support Center also offers a FLATS proficiency exam in Haitian Creole.
Hawaiian
The Center for Language Studies will offer beginning courses in Hawaiian during Fall and Winter Semesters if a qualified teacher and sufficient student interest can be found.
Hebrew
Department of Asian and Near Eastern Languages
A full range of Hebrew courses (both Modern Hebrew and Biblical Hebrew) are taught at BYU through the Department of Asian and Near Eastern Languages. The department offers an undergraduate minor in Hebrew. Intensive courses in Hebrew are offered by the Center for Language Studies during Summer Term.
Hindi
The Center for Language Studies will offer beginning courses in Hindi during Fall and Winter Semesters if a qualified teacher and sufficient student interest can be found.
Hmong
The Center for Language Studies will offer FLANG 330R, an advanced Hmong course which requires fluency, as well as beginning courses if a qualified teacher and sufficient student interest can be found. The Center also administers a Hmong Credit Exam for BYU students. The Humanities Technology Research Support Center also offers a FLATS proficiency exam in Hmong.
Hungarian

Javanese

A variety of Latin courses are taught at BYU through the Department of Humanities, Classics, and Comparative Literature. The department offers an undergraduate major and minor in Latin Teaching, and Latin is an available emphasis under the department's Classical Studies undergraduate major.
Latvian
Although BYU does not currently offer courses or proficiency testing in Latvian, the Center for Language Studies will schedule courses in Latvian if a qualified teacher and sufficient student interest can be found. Lithuanian

A full range of Portuguese courses are taught at BYU through the Department of Spanish and Portuguese. Separate tests are given for Continental and Brazilian dialects. The Humanities Technology Research Support Center also offers a FLATS proficiency exam in Portuguese.
Quechua

Waray-Waray
Although BYU does not currently offer courses or proficiency testing in Waray-Waray, the Center for Language Studies will schedule courses in Waray-Waray if a qualified teacher and sufficient student interest can be found.
Welsh
The Center for Language Studies offers beginning (100-level) courses during Fall and Winter Semesters. Intermediate (200-level) courses are offered in Wales through the Study Abroad Program during Spring and Summer Terms. An advanced reading course is offered at various times throughout the year. The Humanities Technology Research Support Center also offers a FLATS proficiency exam in Welsh.
