Languages Offered at BYU: Australia and South Pacific

Bislama
Bislama is the national language in the Republic of Vanuatu, and one of the three official languages spoken in this country. Although BYU does not currently offer courses in Bislama, the Center for Language Studies will schedule courses in Bislama if a qualified teacher and sufficient student interest can be found.

English
Courses in English for native speakers are taught at BYU through the Department of English and the Department of Linguistics and English Language. The Department of English offers undergraduate majors and minors in both English and English Teaching, as well as a graduate MA program in English. Programs in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) are administered through the Department of Linguistics, and include a TESOL undergraduate minor, TESOL Graduate Certificate, and TESOL MA degree. Nonnative speakers may enroll in English as a Second Language (ESL) courses at BYU through the Department of Linguistics and the English Language Center. The Humanities Technology Research Support Center also offers a FLATS proficiency exam in English.

Fijian
Although BYU does not currently offer courses in Fijian, the Center for Language Studies will schedule courses in Fijian if a qualified teacher and sufficient student interest can be found. The Humanities Technology Research Support Center also offers a FLATS proficiency exam in Fijian.

Maori
Maori is the language spoken by the indigenous Maori people of New Zealand. Although BYU does not currently offer courses in Maori, the Center for Language Studies will schedule courses in Maori if a qualified teacher and sufficient student interest can be found. The Humanities Technology Research Support Center also offers a FLATS proficiency exam in Maori.

Rarotongan
Rarotongan is the official language of the Cook Islands located near New Zealand. Although BYU does not currently offer courses in Rarotongan, the Center for Language Studies will schedule courses in Rarotongan if a qualified teacher and sufficient student interest can be found. The Humanities Technology Research Support Center also offers a FLATS proficiency exam in Rarotongan.

The Center for Language Studies offers FLANG 330R, an advanced Samoan course which requires fluency. In addition, the Center will schedule beginning courses in Samoan if a qualified teacher and sufficient student interest can be found. The Center also administers a Samoan Credit Exam for BYU students. The Humanities Technology Research Support Center also offers a FLATS proficiency exam in Samoan.
