ASL
American Sign Language is the predominate form of sign language used as a means of communication among deaf communities in the United States and much of Canada. A full range of ASL courses are taught at BYU through the Center for Language Studies, and intensive courses in ASL are regularly offered during Spring and Summer Terms. Students can complete the GE languages of learning credit by completing ASL 202. The department does not offer a major or minor in ASL; however, advanced ASL classes, which include ASL linguistics and introduction to interpreting, are offered.

Courses in English for native speakers are taught at BYU through the Department of English and the Department of Linguistics and English Language. The Department of English offers undergraduate majors and minors in both English and English Teaching, as well as a graduate MA program in English. Programs in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) are administered through the Department of Linguistics, and include a TESOL undergraduate minor, TESOL Graduate Certificate, and TESOL MA degree. Nonnative speakers may enroll in English as a Second Language (ESL) courses at BYU through the Department of Linguistics and the English Language Center. The Humanities Technology Research Support Center also offers a FLATS proficiency exam in English.

The Center for Language Studies will offer beginning courses in Hawaiian during Fall and Winter Semesters if a qualified teacher and sufficient student interest can be found.

Spanish
A full range of Spanish courses are taught at BYU through the Department of Spanish and Portuguese. The department offers undergraduate majors and minors in Spanish, Spanish Teaching and Spanish Translation as well as a graduate MA program in Spanish Literature. The department administers a Spanish Credit Exam for BYU students and offers intensive courses in Spanish during Summer Term. The Humanities Technology Research Support Center also offers a FLATS proficiency exam in Spanish.
