Course Options

Return to Language Certificate

In order to be eligible to earn a BYU Language Certificate, you need to complete three specific courses, one course in each of the following categories: 

1. Language
2. Civilization/Culture
3. Literature 

Course options for each language are listed below.  You must receive a grade of B- or higher in each course.

Arabic

*PORT 321 is required as one of the three courses. It must be taken first, and may be counted toward any of the three categories (Language, Civilization/Culture, or Literature).

Students may count PORT 323A or 323B to satisfy one course requirement in either of the following scenarios: 

1. If 321 is completed as the Literature course option, then complete an option from the Civilization/Culture course options and complete 323R as the Language course option. 

2. If 321 is completed as the Civilization/Culture course option, then complete an option from the Literature course options and complete 323A or 323B as the Language course option. 

Note: For MSB students, MSB 596R can be used to satisfy one course requirement.

Russian

Students may count SPAN 323A, 323B, or 323C to satisfy one course requirement in either of the following scenarios: 

1. If 321 is completed as the Literature course option, then complete an option from the Civilization/Culture course options and complete 323R as the Language course option. 

2. If 321 is completed as the Civilization/Culture course option, then complete an option from the Literature course options and complete 323A, 323B, or 323C as the Language course option.
